*Aquafitness means getting in shape and improving your physical condition in water.
*It has a wide range of benefits and a wide variety of exercises that will allow you to get out of your routine and discover a new activity.
*At La Perla you can do it (always in seawater) either by yourself or with scheduled classes.
A top-rated yoga master, B. K. S. Iyengar, used to say that the body is naturally lazy. And it is the mind that has to get it up and running in order to practice yoga (or any other physical activity) and thus benefit from it.
To benefit? Yes, of course, who hasn’t felt that delicious feeling of well-being after engaging in some sport (with more or less intensity) or a long walk in the mountains? Because beyond the health benefits of physical activity, endorphins’ effects on us must be taken into account.
At La Perla in the city of Donostia-San Sebastián, we are, among many other features, a great source of endorphins thanks to our thalassotherapy treatment circuit and our gym. Thus, why not practice an activity that combines the two most active areas (the gym and thalassotherapy) of our resort located in the heart of the bay of La Concha?
This physical activity is called… aquafitness!
And what is aquafitness? It is getting fit and improving your physical condition in water. In our case, it is in seawater, which makes us the only place in San Sebastian to offer this discipline in this environment.
Aquafitness is a form of physical exercise practised in water and benefits from the greater weightlessness of the saline environment. Seawater is denser than freshwater, which is why it allows for greater buoyancy and reduces the sensation of body weight by more than 50%.
As in a ‘dry’ training, when training in water, a very comprehensive workout is carried out consisting of:
-Muscle toning
-Cardiovascular training
-Stretching
-Body control.
You have probably also heard of aquagym and you are probably wondering if one thing (aquafitness) and the other (aquagym) are the same thing. Well, no, they are not the same.
What are the differences between aquafitness and aquagym?
The fundamental difference is that aquagym is performed without implements, aids or equipment of any kind: they are physical exercises carried out in the water and only using your own body.
On the other hand, Aquafitness uses a wide variety of equipment and implements that offer resistance to the water, such as paddles, foam sticks, boxes, etc., which means that the effort and cardiovascular activity are more outstanding.
What are the advantages of getting into a pool for a workout?
Many of them have to do with the fact that aquafitness began as a way of resuming a training routine after an injury, making the exercises more effective and less painful. Muscle toning in water is gentle but very effective as it is impossible to make violent movements that damage joints or bones. All these movements are accompanied by vibrations that perform a self-massage, which is an excellent way of preventing tendonitis.
If you want to practice cardio, the aquafitness pool at La Perla Thalassotherapy has a variety of cardiovascular machines in the water (exercise bikes, elliptical equipment, swimming harnesses…) which, combined with a good toning workout, round off a great workout and allow you to develop not only your cardiovascular capacity but also your strength and endurance.
You can practice aquafitness at La Perla either by yourself or by joining our regular classes. Our team of trainers and instructors will help you develop a workout that suits your interests, so don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
Train in water, and you will experience new thrills, new motivations and, for sure, a good dose of endorphins soaked in water!
